Although many of the current laws and regulations have come into force before the development of nanotechnological production processes and engineered nanomaterials, they also apply to engineered nanoproducts, if not explicitly regulated. However, in the past decade, different regulations have been adapted to the specifics of nanomaterials at national and European level. This chapter therefore presents the most important European regulations, which contain specific passages on nanotechnologies or nanomaterials.
Nanotechnologies are cross-sectional technologies that are used in various industries and products. Since there are no specific "nano-laws" which deal with nanotechnological topics, the sectoral regulations are decisive. At the sectoral regulation level, there are regulations in the EU in which nanospecific aspects are already taken into account. Further adjustments to sectoral laws are being reviewed by the European Commission.
