The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has published proposals on terminologies (naming) and definitions of nanomaterials. However, these are not generally accepted or legally binding.

A large number of nanomaterials are used in industry and in consumer products. In addition, there are often dozens of (surface) modifications of the primary materials which have very different properties. This makes it impossible to present all the different nanomaterials here. However, a short selection of important nanomaterials is presented in the chapter "short portrait".
