The market potential of nanotechnologies is huge. As cross-cutting technologies, nanotechnologies can be used in various industries. Nanotechnologies serve in the development of new products as well as in the improvement of old products. Due to their new physical or chemical properties, nanomaterials provide many market opportunities and enable the development of system components that substantially improve products or enable new functionalities (BSI 2007). The majority of industries in Germany benefit from nanotechnologically-optimized components and products (BMBF 2011). Nanotechnologies are used, for example, in the areas of medicine, chemistry, electronics and IT, the optical industry, automotive engineering, textile, environmental, energy and construction engineering.
